Congratulations! You’ve signed your lease and are ready to make your new apartment your home. Before you can settle in, you’re going to have to move all of your stuff! The process of moving things from your old home to your new home is a strenuous, all-day affair. In preparation for the big day, begin planning everything months in advance – book your movers, map out how you want your furniture arranged, and ask for help along the way. One great way to do this is by reviewing your apartment’s floorplan. Continue reading for some more tips to make your moving experience smooth and hassle-free.

Decide Who Will Help You Move

Are you going to hire professional movers or are you sticking to a few friends and family members to help you move into your new home? These are important questions to ask, especially when it comes to cost. When hiring professional movers, make sure they are reliable and cost-effective. The best thing to do is to explore a few options and pick the one that gives you the best bang for your buck. If you chose not to hire professional movers, all you have to do is rent the moving truck and gather your friends and family members to help you load and unload your items. Make sure that those who help you move are okay with being on their feet all day carrying heavy items – it’s a big part of the job and you don’t want someone getting hurt!

Get Rid of Items You Don’t Need

Moving is the perfect chance to eliminate items you no longer need or use. Packing up all your belongings is one of the only opportunities where you’ll be able to see every single thing you own and decide if it’s worth keeping. For the items you don’t want anymore, consider having a garage sale or donating the items. This way, you will have fewer items to move and you will either end up with more money in your pocket or the gratification of helping those in need.

Pack with Caution

As you pack, keep in mind that all of your precious items will be loaded into the back of a truck and there’s a chance that some things will break if you don’t protect them. Invest in lots of bubble wrap for your fragile items to ensure their safety during the move. If you want to save time, space, and money, use your clothing as an alternative to bubble wrap. Take your bulkiest sweatshirts and your softest shirts and place them around the box and in between items. The clothes will serve the same purpose as the bubble wrap. The only difference is that you won’t have to spend money on it, which is always a good thing. Another tip is to pack your plates vertically. They have a higher chance of breaking if they are placed in the box horizontally.

Use Space Bags and Hangers

When you begin packing clothes, start with out-of-season clothes. Since you are less likely to wear summer clothes in the winter, or vice versa, you will be less likely to pack and unpack those items in the days ahead of your move. Bulky sweaters and sweatpants should go in vacuum sealable bags to help save space. The best way to pack your closet is to keep everything on hangers and use a giant garbage bag to store those items. This will save you the trouble of taking things off hangers, folding them, and eventually placing them back on hangers.

Label All Boxes

This one is a no-brainer. Label every single box so you know exactly what’s inside. To be even more organized, you can also write what room it goes in so your movers know where to put all the boxes. Make sure to label the boxes along the sides rather than on the top. By writing on the sides, you can read it even if the boxes are stacked on top of each other. If one box contains a precious family heirloom or your good china, make it known by writing “fragile” in big, bold letters. This will let your movers know to be extra careful with those boxes.
